EV Charging station construction market analysis

According to the latest survey report of Trend Force, the pace of construction of global public charging piles for automobiles is facing multiple challenges, including land resource restrictions and the complexity of grid planning. In addition, as the growth rate of the new energy vehicle market gradually slows down, the global public charging pile deployment is expected to drop significantly to 30% in 2024, which is a significant decline compared with the 60% growth rate in 2023.

After an in-depth analysis of the situation in major markets, the report pointed out that China still maintains its leading position in the number of public charging piles in the world. It is estimated that by the end of 2024, the number of public charging piles in China will reach 3.6 million, accounting for nearly 70% of the total number of public charging piles in the world, demonstrating China's strength in the construction of new energy vehicle infrastructure.

At the same time, South Korea has also shown strong growth momentum in the construction of public charging piles. The report predicts that the number of charging piles in South Korea this year will achieve an annual growth rate of 39%, which ranks first in the world. According to this development trend, South Korea is expected to achieve its goal of building 500,000 public charging stations ahead of schedule in 2025.

Charging infrastructure still has shortcomings

Although from the data analysis, my country is in a leading position in the construction of public charging piles, there is also a slowdown in growth. According to the data analysis of the China Charging Alliance compiled by the China Passenger Car Association, the annual cumulative increase of public charging piles in 2024 will be 665,000, a decrease of 9% from the same period last year. At the same time, there are still some shortcomings in my country's infrastructure construction, which need to be further improved and optimized.

First, in terms of the distribution of charging piles, my country presents a significant imbalance. First-tier and coastal cities have become the key areas for the construction of charging piles due to factors such as high economic development levels and strong policy support. Taking Guangdong Province as an example, its number of public charging piles is far ahead, about 650,000, which is twice that of the second-ranked Zhejiang Province and more than five times that of the tenth-ranked Beijing. However, in the central and western regions and some second- and third-tier cities, the number of charging piles is relatively small. This huge gap between cities makes the convenience of using new energy vehicles in different regions significantly different.

Looking further at individual cities, although the number of charging piles is growing, it is still insufficient compared to the increasing number of new energy vehicles. Especially in some areas with a high number of pure electric vehicles, such as the core areas of some large cities, the growth rate of charging piles is far behind the increase in vehicles. This makes it extremely difficult for car owners to find charging facilities, which often requires a lot of time and effort.
